Continuing the momentum around early stage companies in the aging space that's being generated in the Bay Area this week by the Boomer Venture Summit in Santa Clara on Wednesday, we (Aging2.0, Innovate50 and InnovateLTC) are having a meetup on Thursday from 6-8pm, at TechSoup, 525 Brannon St, San Francisco, 94107 (between 4th and 5th in SOMA).

Come and join for drinks, networking, and to hear from some of the rising stars who are using disruptive technologies to make a big difference in the aging market. The format, as usual, will be short talks by some fascinating presenters, followed by Q&A, and most importantly, the chance for you to introduce yourselves to fellow innovators in the space.

Geoff Clapp, Founder and CTO, Health Hero Network and Advisor to Rock Health

Geoff is a rare combination of a successful tech entrepreneur in the aging space - having conceived and built the Health Hero Network (serving in multiple roles including CTO) which provides in-home telemonitoring, raising over $50m in venture capital and then selling the business to Robert Bosch. Geoff now spends most of his time advising startups, and is a very active mentor / advisor to the hot health incubator RockHealth, where he just hosted their demo day. From his bio:

As CTO, Mr. Clapp designed and implemented award winning hardware and software products, including Business Week’s 2000 Product of The Year award, 2001 Silver Medical Design Excellence Award, 2001 Best Enabling Technology Technology (DMAA), and 2001 Best Telehealth Vendor (HIMSS). 

During his time as COO, Mr. Clapp guided the company through the “bubble” bursting in Silicon Valley, and rebuilt the organization into the largest telehealth vendor in the world with cornerstone customers such as the Department of Veterans Affairs and McKesson. 

Marcie Rogo, Founder, Silver Seeker

Marcie is a recent MBA graduate who is passionate about the need for new products and services for the aging market. She has conceived, funded and developed SilverSeeker, which is an online, customized, and safe arena for communicating and connecting within adult retirement communities. It is currently in private beta. She has a working implementation live with her first customer (a senior living facility near Los Angeles) which is generating tremendous amount of insight every day about the activities and interests of the older adults who are using the service, and has already received angel investment, and is preparing to scale nationally.

Charlie Sheldon, Co-founder and Director, Studio 315

Charlie Sheldon is the co-founder and current director of Studio 315, a design cooperative that houses one to five person companies working in sustainable product design, medical device development, consumer electronics design, furniture, interaction and mobile application design. In 2007 he founded Cragelmeyer LLC, a mass customizable, contemporary furniture company (Cragelmeyer.com). From 2008 - 2010 he chaired the San Francisco Chapter of the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA-SF.org). His areas of expertise are in sustainable product innovation, design strategy, creative facilitation, design research and design education. He also teaches at and manages external relationships for California College of the Arts Industrial Design Department (http://www.cca.edu/academics/industrial-design). For the past three years he has focused his academic research on applying the design process to issues associated with aging, change in ability and 'non-medicalized' health management to identify areas where design intervention can shift systems so they empower seniors and lessen the need for caregivers.

Aime Kao, Professor, UCSF Memory and Aging Center

Dr. Aimee Kao is a graduate of Brown University and the University of Iowa School of Medicine where she received her medical degree and a doctorate degree in physiology and biophysics studying the molecular mechanisms of insulin signaling. She completed an internship in Internal Medicine at the Beth Israel-Deaconess Hospital in Boston and a residency in Neurology at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), where she was Chief Resident. Dr. Kao participates in patient evaluation and management at the Memory and Aging Center. She is a member of the American Academy of Neurology and the Genetics Society of America.

After completing a clinical fellowship in behavioral neurology at the UCSF Memory and Aging Center, Dr. Kao received a Hillblom Fellowship to join the laboratory of Dr. Cynthia Kenyon to study the role of aging in development of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, with a particular interest in Parkinson’s-related dementias including multiple system atrophy, corticobasal degeneration, progressive supranuclear palsy and dementia with Lewy bodies. Her research interests have expanded to now include studying the role of progranulin and tau in regulating neuronal health and integrity. Her current research is supported by an NIH K08 award as well as foundation grants from the Consortium for Frontotemporal Dementia Research, the Tau Consortium, the Hellman Family Foundation and a UCSF ADRC grant. Her laboratory information can be accessed at www.kaolab.org.

Ivan Osadchiy, Founder & CEO, Family Suite

Ivan Osadchiy is Founder and CEO of Family Suite, makers of Family Ribbon, a new app that is launching on June 16th, which they describe as "the faster easier and safer way to keep family connected". Ivan is a former McKinsey consultant who splits his time between his development team in Moscow, and US bases in New York and San Francisco.
